Learn the difference between carat (CT) and carat total weight (CTW) in jewelry. Discover what carat weight and total carat weight mean when buying fine jewelry pieces.
When shopping for fine jewelry (diamonds or gemstones), you’ll often see terms like CT and CTW on product descriptions/tags. The abbreviations are similar, but they mean different things — and understanding them helps you know exactly what you’re buying.
Carat (CT):
Carat (CT), describes the weight of a single diamond or gemstone. It is a standard measurement in which one carat equals 0.2 grams.
For example, a 2.00 CT diamond ring has one diamond that weighs exactly 2 carats (0.4 grams).
Carat Total Weight (CTW):
Carat Total Weight (CTW), is the combined weight of all the diamonds and/or gemstones in a piece of jewelry.
For example, if a necklace has one large diamond in the center and several small sapphire stones around it, the CTW tells you the total weight of all those stones together.
Additional Examples:
A solitaire ring with one 3.00 CT diamond = 3.00 CT
A ring with a 2.00 CT center diamond and a halo that has 0.25CT of ruby has a total carat weight of 2.25 CTW.
2.00 CT in the center + 0.25 CT in accent stones = 2.25 CTW
Important Tip:
If a piece has several gemstone types or an intricate design, the CTW for each gemstone may be listed separately. For instance, a necklace with an intricate design that has:
- 4.00 CT diamond in the center
- 1.00 CT sapphire on the right
- 1.00 CT sapphire on the left
- 2.00 CT emerald in the back
- 0.50 CT of diamond accent stones
- 3.00CT of sapphire accents stones
- 2.00 CT of emerald accents stones
May have the CTW listed as following:
- 4.50 CTW (Diamond)
- 5.00 CTW (Sapphire)
- 4.00 CTW (Emerald)
Make sure to confirm this so that you understand the value of your piece.
Understanding CT vs. CTW helps you compare jewelry pieces accurately and make informed decisions about size, shine, and value.
